Joel was born and raised in The Bronx, New York. A filmmaker and activist, he is a former Fulbright Scholar and holds an MA in documentary filmmaking from the University of the Arts, London. He has also studied narrative film production at the National Film and Television School in the UK and at the University of Southern California.
Since beginning his career as a director, Joel has worked on a breadth of films spanning documentary, experimental and narrative cinema. His work aims to collaborate with and advocate for communities at the periphery of society, centering on themes of racial, social and economic justice. Joel has also worked as an educator in NYC where he taught filmmaking to at-risk youth. He is a Tribeca Film Institute All Access and Warner Media Our Local Is Global grantee, and an IFP No Borders alumnus. Principal photography on his first feature length film was scheduled for Summer 2023.
